What to Say When

Public Meltdowns

What to say during a store meltdown

A store meltdown is hard because your child is upset and you can feel everyone else watching. That pressure can make a parent rush, over-explain, or give in just to end the scene.

Why this moment is hard

Public moments require very simple language. Your child needs fewer words, not a lecture about money, dinner, or why checkout candy is not happening today.

What to say first

“You really want that. We are not buying candy today.”

When they push back

“But I want it!”

“I know. It is hard to want something and not get it.”

“Please, please, please!”

“The answer is still no. I will help you move your body.”

Screaming or dropping to the floor

“You are having a hard time. I am going to keep us moving.”

What to avoid getting pulled into

Avoid parenting for the audience. Keep your words for your child, not for the people nearby.

Practice the back-and-forth

  1. Use one clear no.
  2. Acknowledge the want.
  3. Move through the next physical step.
