What to say when your child refuses the car seat

Car seat refusal is one of those moments where the boundary is not optional. Your child can be upset, but the car cannot move until they are buckled safely.

Why this moment is hard

The challenge is staying calm while taking action. This is not a moment where a long explanation usually helps. It needs a short safety boundary and steady follow-through.

What to say first

“You do not want to get in. The car seat is not a choice. I will help you buckle safely.”

When they push back

“I don’t want to!”

“You do not want to. We are still getting buckled.”

“I can do it myself!”

“You can try first. If your body is not buckled, I will help.”

Kicking or arching away

“I will be gentle and firm. My job is to keep you safe.”

What to avoid getting pulled into

Avoid turning the safety boundary into a question. “Can you get in?” may sound optional when it is not.

Practice the back-and-forth

  1. State the safety rule.
  2. Offer limited autonomy if there is time.
  3. Follow through calmly when help is needed.
