What to say when your child refuses to turn off the iPad
Screen time transitions are hard because the fun stops all at once. Even when a child knew the limit was coming, the ending can still feel unfair.
Why this moment is hard
The parent’s job is not to convince the child that the limit is fun. The job is to hold the limit while helping the child move through the disappointment.
What to say first
“Screen time is done. I know stopping is hard. I will help you turn it off.”
When they push back
“You want to finish. The screen is still done now.”
“It feels unfair. The limit is not changing.”
“You are really mad. I will not argue. The iPad is going away.”
What to avoid getting pulled into
Avoid explaining the rule over and over. After the limit is clear, more explanation can become fuel for more argument.
